In Song & Dance, I wanted to translate the invisible rhythm of music into a visual symphony of colour and texture. For me, this piece is about movement—the way a melody rises and falls, and how we move through life in response to it. I chose a sophisticated palette of deep indigos, charcoal greys, and warm, sandy ochres, layering them to create a composition that feels as though it is mid-motion.
As I worked with my palette knife, I felt a sense of choreographic flow. I sculpted the impasto into swirling, energetic clusters that contrast with the more open, contemplative spaces of the canvas.
To me, the darker tones represent the depth and 'bass' of our experiences, while the lighter flickers are the 'high notes' of joy and spontaneity. This work is an interpretation of the harmony found in contrast.
